My Digits...

Raw Shot from SL, just cropped and using
Strawberry Singh's "original" windlight setting,
Yeah I'm late on this and I didn't do it last year, but I was intrigued by Strawberry's post.  Has Mesh changed things with regards to shape/size?  Has it changed things for the better with regard to clothes/attachments?

Have we all become used to changing parts of our avatar each time we try on a new mesh item of clothing?

The answer, at least for me, is yes.  Sure I'm not the most fashionable guy in SL, I'm not hosting fashion shows or telling you what not to wear...hell I have ginger hair I have my own problems, you know?

But my shape has changed and does change occasionally depending on what I'm wearing.  This is an altered shape so I can't list all the stuff here, for obvious reasons.  But I can tell you my height and can tell you my "Standard Size" settings.

My Digits
Height - 100 (7'8 using the Avatar Ruler)

Body Fat - 13
Belly Size - 9
Torso Muscle - 72
Love Handles - 35
Leg Muscle - 76
Butt Size - 65
Saddle Bags - 49
Package - 49
Pectorals - 10

Impressive digits, no?  Ok, apart from the height those stats are Standard Size Large.  But let's get the height thing out there...
I'm 7'8????  Yeah...that's apparently "Golem" territory, but I have a legitimate excuse.  At least I think it's legitimate, my fiancĂ©e is in fashion, she models, she's tall.  Now I could revert to a more "natural" height if I wanted to look like Tom Cruise when he was with Nicole Kidman, but sadly SL doesn't work that way.  Animations automatically assume that the Male is taller than the Female.  So I keep myself taller just for that sake (and not because my fragile RL masculinity likes the idea of being all powerfully tall in Second Life...no not at all).

Do I change things in SL when I want/need to...Hell yes, butt size, pec size, the whole thing needs to be reworked depending on the outfit.  Does this bother me.  Yes, I can't wait for the deformer.  I hope it does all it's supposed to do.

so that's my two and a half L$'s, thanks for reading :).

There's trouble ahead

Monday morning, Northpoint, while re-arranging my desk and looking over some of last nights shows I was approached by a man I'd never before seen. This is not unusual for Northpoint and I always do my best to help but this guy looked somewhat official as he started putting posters up around the building.

After a light interrogation where I was asked where Miss Widdershins would likely to be and I confirmed all the data I had available on what today's Designing Worlds schedule was, the gentleman left...leaving me wondering...what has Saffia done this time? And more to the point, how much bail is it going to cost?

Happy Rez Day To Me...Happy Rez Day!!

4 Years of Second Life! Four Years! That's a presidential term, that's a long time, I've lived through the boom, the bust, the highs, the lows, the lag! The question of whether SL will be still here in another 4 years is one that I might have put into the back of my mind last night, but that is a question!

I have a fair few people on my friends list in SL, though I really wish Second Life Friendslist had categories so I could put them into friends/family/colleagues/enemies folders and know instantly where each one stands. Out of all these friends I have only one love, Honoria Paine-Lusch, my darling Honeybee.

I returned home after the Machinima Expo had started over at Pop Art Labs (one has to be seen at these events and I will get to watch the whole show on Treet.TV when it is archived) to find my darling Honeybee finishing off the touches to the gift area (I'd awoke to a house full of balloons but balloons and our dog, Foxy, don't mix). The girls were staying at their aunts and we had the night to ourselves (a somewhat rare occasion), I opened the gifts (an awesome wallet, lamp and giftcard from my daughters, and a really cool watch from my wife) and upon looking at the time on the watch my wife informed me we might be running late...

"Running late for what?"

Within seconds I was whisked on board the Orient Express...

Not knowing the destination we were heading to, and feeling slightly light headed as my dear Honeybee explained that we'd have time for a meal, shower and change before arriving at our destination. The food, was exquisite but the company was heavenly as we chatted and ate, drank coffee and laughed. My wife had packed my favourite formal suit though there was another parcel next to it that I wondered about, that would come later. I showered, changed and we arrived at our destination.

San Francisco...

How did the Orient Express get to San Francisco? Well this is Second Life, anything is possible. But under the moonlight with the city behind us we danced, we kissed, the world slipped away from us and time stopped. I serenaded...

We laughed, we joked...it was a beautiful night and a wonderful feeling that seemed to be over far too soon as the conductor informed us we had to depart and get away...

This was the moment for the other package...Opening it up I was shocked to discover a skin tight body armour and face mask, with a questioning look to Honeybee and her grinning at me we "Space Suited Up" as Barney from How I Met Your Mother would say and in a beam of futuristic light we arrived at our next destination.

Mars...

The Red Planet, the fourth planet from the Sun, Mars was also known as Ares to the Greeks and renamed Mars by the Romans. The planet was named for the God Of War because when they looked upon it they saw it as a badge of blood in the sky. Our adventure was only just beginning though, as we stumbled across a deserted outpost that looked like it had been quickly abandoned.

Honeybee and I quickly and without hesitation began to investigate the events surrounding the outpost. But this story will be completed another time.

This was my RezDay and I couldn't have asked for a more perfect day with my wonderful wife.

What makes a show successful?

I have a firm belief that a quality product is better than a substandard product, "sure," you're saying to yourself "who doesn't?". Hopefully no-one, that's why iPad sales outweigh the sales of lower quality no-name iPad-a-likes (you know the ones that pop up with Android 1.6 on them and are basically big calculators with poor touch screens).

In that regard, Treet.TV does quality programming, Paisley, Saffia, Pooky, etc know how to make a show and know what to do with that show, this week we (Texas and I) were looking at a new show from a new member of our production team. I can't tell you the name of the show yet or even the producer, but I had 2 edits of this show. One was an edit of low quality that was passable, and the other was an edit that was great.

I'd already made my mind up that the show was going to be aired on seeing the lower quality version. But the producer wanted to get a higher quality, she wanted it to look great and for the visuals to POP! This puts her right up there in that quality producer category, this puts her up there with the best and it's clear that whatever she does, she wants to do it right.

Soon this project will be officially announced and you'll be able to see for yourself

It's a weird week

ok, so I've been playing Empire Avenue this week and that's kinda fun, trading shares in Second Life avatars on there is a bit of a break from my normal stuff and it has renewed my interest in Twitter and blogging.  So there's pluses all around.

If you know me at all you know I do a lot of inworld work for Treet.TV.  Most of the stuff is behind the scenes, though I do get to host occasionally.  This week while producing GOHA's sunday night show I got to do something I hadn't done before and that's host with a very old friend.

I've worked with some great people at Treet in front of the camera, Kert Upshaw, RacerX Gullwing, Salem Nightly/Blood, Sante Klees, Baldi McMillan, Saffia Widdershins, Elrik Merlin, Zen Paine and even Pooky Amsterdam, but all of these people I've known for around 2 years or less.  Vivienne Coppola I've known for the best part of four years and working with her on GOHA was hilarious.

Check out that video and see what I mean, they'll be another night of fun and "britishness" this Sunday (27th March 2011) at 3pm PST Treet.tv/live.

Relay For Life - Giant Snail Racing

Relay For Life...
A massively good cause which RacerX Gullwing supports in his own inimitable style.  How does he support the American Cancer Society and make it fun for people?  Giant Snail Cross Country Race!!

Like a Marathon for the Giant Snail community the Cross Country Race pits 45 foot snail against 45 foot snail across 60 sims in a battle of endurance and grid stability.

The actual sight of a large number of snails racing down the roads of mainland sims in Second Life is a sight to behold for passers by and the carnival feeling of it will bring smiles to both the young and the old.

And again it's for a good cause...
You can be involved with the Giant Snail Cross Country Race in more ways than one, you can either race (the next event is on April 17th and you can get your scarves at Aborholm, Abitibi in Second Life)  There are different scarves available and they will ultimately place you on different sims at the start of the race.

There is something new this time, for those who don't feel up to a marathon race dressed as a giant snail..

Here is the way you can be involved without having to be a snail.

You can sponsor a snail

The sponsor would pledge so many L$ on a snail for each sim they went through. Depending on the place of the snail at the finish of the race the amount would be more.

for example

10th or below.......1L$ per sim,
9th...........................2L$,
8th...........................3L$,
7th...........................4L$, ect. to 1st place where the amount would be 10 L per sim for a maximum donation of 600L for the 60 sim race.

So I'm looking for sponsors...IM me in world if you would like to sponsor me through the race...Again, I can't stress how much this is for a good cause, a few L$'s might mean very little to you, but every little helps.

Second Life Viewer 2.0

I didn't want to post this earlier, sure I could have posted my thoughts on Viewer 2.0 an hour after I downloaded it.  But I would have only been looking at some of the changes, I decided to wait until I had a few more days to explore this strange new Viewer.

First off, let me talk a little about the current viewers available for Second Life.  Sure if you're a casual SL'er you've probably only used the main LL viewer and maybe you've used Snowglobe each of these viewers are ok...but inarguably the better SL viewers come from different sources.

Henri Beauchamp's  Cool SL Viewer is my primary viewer, I also like the Emerald Viewer, though that can tax my graphics card at times.  There's the Vertical Life viewer which is excellent for the stripped down quality and extra FPS boost it can give you (vital for playing GOHA or Giant Snail Racing) and there's lots of other great third party viewers out there.

This is not to say that the Official Viewers don't have their place, they do and without them most of the third party viewers wouldn't be so great.  But here we have Viewer 2.0...a new wave as it were...and how does it hold up?

My God It's Pretty!!
If that's not your first thought then it really should be...because it inarguably is very very pretty...the UI differences are the first thing you spot...from the docked sidebar to the sleek navigation area and favourites bar, this is a viewer that actually makes you feel like it's a much more classy Second Life.

Sure there's flaws in this design...trying to drop something from your inventory to a person via their profile becomes a bit more of a pain (not to mention the current bug on not being able to change object permissions of things in my inventory - this is a bug...atleast that's what I'm hoping).

But the big win is that the UI and Sidebar make SL feel more professional and easier to use.  I've taught students the basics of SL with the regular viewer and I know it can take a while for non "gamers" to get used to it.  With this UI and the way it's set up I can see this taking a lot less time...things just seem more intuitive, easier and better presented.

Big Win For LL
Well almost.  Sure things look better but I can't help but feel that some of the usability of Second Life has been reduced a little.  Drop Menu's replacing Pie Menu's...I'm still unsold on this although the great Torley Linden said that he missed the Pie Menu's too at first "but give yourself time to use 'em... maybe the pie won't seem so tasty.."
So maybe I'm just still in the adjusting phase.  I really like some of the new features, the Hyperlink style "My Outfits" creator is awesome, meaning I don't have to create actual folders for outfits but can pick and choose and store my favourites there.  That's an epic win especially considering the changing into and out of Snail Shapes or Hockey Kits I do on a weekly/semi daily basis.

The Friends list with profile pictures on gives a little sheen to finding people and looks very cool.

As this is the first Viewer 2.0 release and I'm sure there'll be many more down the line, I'm actually looking forward to seeing what Emerald or Henri do with this code to create new Cool Viewer 2.0's or Emerald 2.0 viewers.  Other than that there is still one big thing missed out of this...

64 bit processing and 64 bit OS systems are becoming more and more popular and SL is still stuck at 32 bit...please let somebody sort that out...

All Is Fair In Love & Warts

Not everyday can be unicorns and butterflies, not everyday can be magic, some days can be gruelling and a measure of stamina rather than that of love. Last night was one of those days.

Incongruously enough it started out with me feeling a little worn out with no real plans and schemes to speak of, but really it started before that. It started with July thinking that she wasn't model pretty enough to model clothes for Luschious Kids. A back and forth between her and I started early in the day and left me feel ragged and tired and quite a little down.

Sympathy for her only goes so far, she's a talented little moppet and can do almost anything she puts her mind to. But her self confidence was low and that rubbed off onto me and when Honeybee and Oreo returned home it begin to rub off on them too.

Honeybee had had a tiring day, I could tell...and I'd had a day where I didn't really do anything but felt emotionally drained. Tired and Tireder. What followed was a night where nothing made sense, where any little action was over analysed and where questions of well being started feeling like an interrogation by the Spanish Inquisition...and to quote Monty Python, no one expects the Spanish Inquisition.

This is rambling with no real purpose, but the night was rambling with no real end...tonight Honeybee and I are acting in a Craig Lyons machinima. Let us look to the future...let tonight be a good one and let yesterday become a fading memory. I love my family and last night with emotions ranging and raging it reminded me how much I love them. Even the bad times aren't so bad.

11 Months

It's now been over 11 months since my Honeybee and I got married, partnered etc...and so many things have changed since last January when we stood in front of a crowd of people who were closest to us and vowed to love each other forever.

Things change all the time in Second Life, it's a given...people alter their shapes/skins etc sometimes this change is good sometimes this change is bad. I've changed a little in the 11 months I've been married but one thing will always remain true, my undying love for Honoria.

To celebrate our 11 months together we planned a night out, music and dancing and food and...good times :).
Naturally, things didn't go to plan. According to the Events listing there was a "Big Band" and "Jazz" night with a meal and...I thought this might be really fun...but the Events listing was wrong...and we turned up to an empty Ballroom dressed to the nines (Honeybee glows in any clothes, but I've always loved her "little black dress" :) )

After the disappointment of finding my plans scuppered...we made haste to a different place...actually it was a Mall Ballroom! It was...er...interesting for the 4 songs we stayed for and thus started our whirlwind tour of Second Life music venues. Between our constant IM's about the quality of the singers or buildings or general hosting of events we had such a good time that the laughter and love made me realise that I am the luckiest man in the world.

Happy 11 Monthiversary, My Darling Honeybee...

I love you

Oreo

So...yeah.

Although I got to spend some great time with my wife on a Wednesday night I'd like to take this opportunity to talk about one of the other ladies in my life, my little Oreo...or in plain English, one of my daughters Oracle Mae.

Oreo is the latest addition to my growing SL family and although we don't get to spend a great deal of time together I cherish each and every moment with her. I'm sort of getting used to being her Dad...and I'm probably not very good at it...though I'm learning.

We went skating for a while on Thursday night at Everlasting Family in Second Life (next to Funky Town) where she showed off some moves and I was able to get this picture of us with Santa...well a Santa mannequin anyway. If you're wondering where she got that cute green skating dress from...well it was actually made for her by her sister (and obviously my other daughter) July.

As ever I always enjoy my time with Oreo and it never seems to be too long, shortly after this picture was taken her Mom and July took her shopping (well lucky chair watching at any rate) and so I was left guarding the house with a cup of strong coffee while waiting for the ladies in my life to return.

This Sunday we're decorating the house for Christmas and the whole family will be involved in one way or another. I'm looking forward to the fun...the madness...the sillyness...

Until next time...

Cold Nights, Warm Hearts

As the legendary Noddy Holder once said in his inimitable way...It's Christmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssss!
Ahh yes, the time is ripe for shopping and dancing..and snow and romancing.

Things have been a bit up in the air of late, Honeybee, myself and the girls have been having issues stemming from RL, to timing to...well...lets just say Holiday arguments are just relegated to real life shall we?

But....Last Night...

Like a glow from some ethereal land, last night warmed my heart and made me feel like I was walking in the air.
It wasn't a massively special night, but was memorable because of it's...niceness...it started out with a shopping trip to *COCO* with my Honeybee imploring me to buy a new coat (and yes I did and yes it's awesome, and yes she's the best shopper in the world :) ). And finished with us slowly dancing to Silent Night in our new local pub The Swan & Tor (check it out on Glastonbury, Second Life).

There was ice-skating in-between...and other stores and planning and cuddling and decorating and smiles and giggles and jokes and...it was one of those nights...

I love you Honeybee...

and though it's been said many times, many ways...Merry Christmas to you

This will only sound like it's about hockey...

Let's rewind a few weeks...

Honeybee and I were working on a set design for a flu game for her fantastic Oshkosh/Wi-TECNe sim. The hockey season was finishing and our team The Cobras were in 4th place with no chance of getting into the playoffs...

I was beginning to work on the All Star stuff, Honeybee was beginning to work out the Awards stuff...the Euro league was struggling with a one sided lack of players and a lack of ideas...An argument started out of a bad joke...

Most arguments couples have tend to take something that isn't the real focus of the argument and twist it...this wasn't one of those...we are both very stubborn commited people, we are both intensely passionate about what we do and strive for perfection. This is great when we work together. Not so good when we're working on side projects and working on one main project and trying to get things sorted in our own way.

There were other issues, we were bounced around a bit and I'd deliberately taken us out of the NA draft process as we didn't need to add to confusion...This was a great idea or so you would think. The truth is that caused us some misgivings it's hard for either of us to take that kind of step back we're all or nothing types and that caused more heat to the fire.

In the midst of this I said "maybe we should take a season off" because if the SLHA could make us argue like this it could destroy us. We talked about that and when things calmed down we decided we didn't want to...then mid week it happened again...then the next week...etc...

Love is something you will give up anything to keep. And after many heated debates and a lot of tears/tantrums/if prim plates could break...We decided to step back...totally...leave the league for atleast a season...concentrate on other projects.

This was made harder because a lot of our friends are SLHA players, I think I can name 3 non SLHA players in my friends list. And one of our closest friends, Jack Belvedere is League Commisioner so telling him was one of the hardest things that Honoria and I have ever done...will ever do.

The projects we have coming up will be announced here but for now...it feels like we've had a great weight lifted off our shoulders and tomorrow is a new day...

Love means making sacrifices, I would sacrifice anything for Honeybee.

The Actual All Star Game...

So it went without much of a hitch...in fact it went swimmingly. Some might say that there were no problems with the SLHA All Star Game (and you can judge for yourself on http://slcn.tv/media/slhockey_032_30nov08.mp4 ).
Sure the Zamboni race was delayed till after the game (and not covered by SLCN as they were pushed for time). Sure some of the MAJOR goal scorers were missing, The leagues best goaltender was missing.
And yes sure there was a few bits and bobs I would have liked to have made better...for instance I made the Shorts and socks at the very last minute...same with the captains armbands...(actually the captains armbands were made really last minute). But play went well...the teams evenly matched and thanks to a wonderful new feature in the SLHA script (thanks to Dyz Warburton our resident scripter GENIUS that he is) we covered our actual first gloves off fight!
But having watched the replay on SLCN it's the best game we've done (for both Kert and I it's our most even commentating...for the league it was a fast paced game...and for some of the players (honeybee I'm looking at you) it was their best played game on SLCN.
So where do we go from here?
Well on the SLHA side of things...we're coming to the end of Season 6...which means...well it means stress for the upper management...there have been major decisions taken with regards to Season 7's draft process...there are awards ceremony's there are the final playoffs between the Ice Lords and the Moose (Game 3 live on SLCN Sunday 2pm SLT)...there's a charity event...and ofcourse there's christmas and new year...
There's also the ever popular rumour mill...I don't know if it's every group in the world that does this when they're not playing or bored...but the SLHA rumour mill has geared up 5 steps for the holiday season. Accusations of "alts", banned people, script tampering, etc. These things are ugly and just keep flying round...a small break from SLHA is coming and that's a good thing I think cause otherwise I might become actually involved in some of this stuff and to be honest I don't want to be.
But finally on a more positive note...wedding plans are underway...as are Luschious plans...so next year promises to start with a bang, a boom and some fun.

The All Stars Week

Ah yes...The All Stars week....
SLHA has an All Stars game every season and of course Season 6 was no exception. With these kinds of things months of planning can all boil down to one week of hell and this was the week that was...
Are you sitting comfortably?
Good I shall begin, The All Stars roster was posted on the Forum by the luscious Honoria Paine (hereby probably referred to as Hon, Honeybee, SexKitten...etc) after a league wide internet vote...and ofcourse the usual names were up there...Beavis Beckham, Marjan Tomba, Billybob Street, Liesa Ember, August Lusch...wait-a-goddamn-minute August Lusch isn't an All Star!
After confirming with Honeybee and conflabbing with Merrik Caproni (who usually makes the All Star kits) I found out that a) I was an All Star and b) Merrik was ill/sick/bedridden and wouldn't be making kits for this years All Star games.
Lets rewind here a little...SLHA has a couple of clothing designers...through it's history these have changed as seasons have progressed and of course have changed and grown better looking as peoples technical skills have improved. Back in the olden times Weis Hickman created the jerseys...they were fairly simple designs but very well done...this lasted S1, 2, 3 ... then Weis wasn't really around much for Season 4 and Jack Belvedere made the Cobras jerseys his own...then Merrik Caproni decided to join in and Season 5 saw a distinct change into classier hockey jersey designs. Season 5 also saw me enter the uniform fray with my Euro League Ravens and Foxes designs these were simple, some would place them somewhere between Weis's uniforms and Merrik's.
Season 6 Merrik perfected his style and did most of the NA uniforms (apart from the Icelords who used the Season 5 uniform originally made by Harley Wachman) and I honed my Foxes and Ravens jerseys to be much more professional looking.
So...people who can make jerseys in SLHA...Weis Hickman (Absent) Merrik Caproni (Ill) Jack Belvedere (Working on Charity Jerseys) Harley Wachman (Absent) August Lusch (dammit!)
So here's what I did first...
I worked on a logo..a kick ass logo a logo that would sum up the differences between light and dark..between power and chaos, between blue and red.
That logo took 30 minutes...and I still love it...!
Ok so logo down...what else did I need?
Ahh yes teams...now having talked with Jack he was thinking along the lines of Slapshot and I was thinking along the lines of Copyright infringement. So I took his idea and said...heck...lets give this things some good old fashioned SLHA league history. The first two teams in the league were the Whales (blue) and the Wolves (red)and the place where the games are held is Jericho Hill so I took those colours and that name and created two teams...using my powers of english and stating the obvious I created the Jericho Reds...

and the Hill Blues
Jericho Reds Hill Blues (see what I did there?)
With that out of the way I worked and worked and worked on the red jersey...
Tuesday arrived and so did my enery levels...I went in world to show Jack the rough version of the red jersey and to talk about how best to split the names of All Stars into two fairly even teams. I was given the go ahead to use a spreadsheet and my imagination.
Finalising the two teams...both looking fairly balanced and my imagination intacked I worked on the Blue jersey to get that to rough form before going out with Honeybee for a well earned non hockey related night to celebrate our anniversary.
PWP cruises...what a night! Seven month anniversary (though anniversary means year but lets not get technical) we dined on a boat with a live artiste (who played sax...and er 'sang' songs) a waitress who hovered around our table and called me Mr August all night but Honeybee and I had tonnes of fun, laughing and a joking in private voice IM...(the sim was set to no voice which I can understand in roleplaying areas like Toxia but at a dinner seemed to be a little more flummaxing!) it was a good night...honestly it was good to get away from the SLHA for a night (though I was being IM'd by members of the league on all sorts of issues).
As the night drew to a close and we were disembarking...we paid our compliments to the hostess and she implored us to look around the sim, the shops, the ice rink...where we could skate or play hockey..."Hockey?" both Honeybee and I asked and our hostess nodded and handed us 2 SLHA Whales sticks...
No matter where you go...there you are...
This raised questions for us...and I turned into Columbo "just one more thing, where did you get these from lady?"...getting nowhere and finding out that the rest of the setup wasn't as decently scripted as ours was (our scoreboard/stats/goal system really is something) we left and returned home giggling at how we just couldn't shake the league.

Let's begin at the beginning...

Goooooooooooooood Morning, Afternoon, Day, Night?
I have absolutely no idea what timezone you're in or when you're reading this so I think I've covered all the bases?

Good...let me introduce myself...I am August Lusch from Second Life (actually from a small part of Second Life near Glastonbury...lovely sim). So what's this blog about? Well this is an introduction to my thoughts, my world, my...y'know...y'know?

I'm a clothing designer, a sportscaster, a SL Hockey player, a lover not a fighter and ofcourse I enjoy the occasional evenings with friends too.

I'm not a shopper...well not by any stretch of the imagination...I'm more what you'd consider a...er...follower of designs rather than someone who goes to find the latest fashions (I leave that pretty much up to my darling fiance Honoria Paine http://honoriapaine.blogspot.com)

During the upcoming weeks we will delve into the psyche of me...also we'll delve into the problems and complications of setting up a wedding in Second Life...

And maybe if you're lucky we might even get to the bottom of why, where, how, what and when...

But until next time, I've been August Lusch and you've been patient..
